I was born and raised outside Chicago, Illinois but have spent most of my adult life in the American South. First at Emory University in Atlanta for my BA in Philosophy, then graduate work at the University of South Carolina. Later I returned to Atlanta to earn a Culinary degree and worked as a caterer/personal chef for several years.
In 2001, I had the opportunity to live and work in Japan on the JET Programme. I spent three years in Japan teaching English and learning Japanese. The exposure I had to an ancient and truly foreign culture has shaped me in many ways.
After returning to the US, I attended The Creative Circus and studied Graphic Design. Since graduating in 2006, I have been working as a freelance designer and teaching at the Circus. The constant interaction with the students and their creative energy inspires me to approach projects from a variety of different perspectives and with enthusiasm.
In 2019, I earned an MFA in Motion Media Design at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta in order to further my knowledge of the theory and techniques of adding motion to graphic design. I took classes in a variety of subjects including title design, dynamic typography, 3D & 2D motion graphics, and stop-motion animation. In addition to these classes I have also worked with several students to create the title sequences and credits for their student films. This is a field that I am interested in and hope to be able to work on bigger films in the future. My immediate goal upon graduation is to work as a motion graphic designer with a long term goal of teaching at the college level in the future.
I consider myself to be a designer and problem solver. I enjoy not only tackling problems, but also teaching others how to solve their own creative problems. This is what has led me to be a designer and a teacher.
As a teacher I have helped young creatives learn and explore print as well as digital media to express themselves and create portfolios worthy of careers in the design and advertising worlds. Learning new skills, technologies, and theories and applying them to solve problems is fundamental to my life as a designer and being able to help others with their learning process and solve their communication needs is what drives me to continually strive to improve myself.
Throughout my career I have enjoyed the technological, aesthetic, and physical aspects of my work. These are things that philosophy, the culinary arts, and design share. Creating a fine meal, laying out a design project, and animating a title sequence all have intellectual and technical challenges. My interests in the technical, artistic, and physical sides of a problem have led me to explore 3D printing and stop-motion filmmaking. It is the combination of these pursuits that is the focus of my thesis.
