“The Thin Man” - title sequence
For this project I chose “The Thin Man” from 1934. The series often includes playful banter and actions between the main stars, and more than an average amount of drinking. The series was shot during the 1930’s and 40’s in the pre-World War II era and often mixed the comedy and murder mystery genres using humor to punctuate more serious situations.
The title sequence explores this playfulness by using animated characters to depict the actors and using animated shadows as a nod to the more serious plot elements. The shadows tell the darker side of the story, while the characters show the lighter side of the film. An example might be the character mixing a cocktail while the shadow is pointing a gun.
Icons used are associated with the characters, drinking cocktails, crime, and murder mysteries; all common elements in the films. The backgrounds are in black and white, while the characters and their relative props are in color.
