“Wizard of Oz” - title sequence
The film is “The Wizard of Oz” and Saul Bass was my influence. The style elements that I focused on were his use of geometric shapes and silhouettes, bold sans serif type and his use of simple color palettes.
My inspirations were his silhouette logos and his use of lines and type in title sequences such as “The Man with the Golden Arm” and “Psycho.” I chose to use simplified figures of the classic characters in the film. I also looked at modern title sequences where his influence could be seen, such as the television titles for “Mad Men” and the film titles for “Catch Me If You Can”.
I used character silhouettes for the actors. For the producer, I chose the iconic flying monkeys since part of a producer’s job is to manage many assets. For the director, I chose the yellow brick road as a metaphor for his role in leading the cast and crew throughout the production and the balloon associated with the Wizard of Oz to symbolize his need to oversee everything, creatively, and to be behind the scenes of the production at every stage.
